Primer cumple de mi wawa

Birthdays are big here in Peru, and our baby’s first birthday was no exception. Our little Brianna Nayaraq had a huge first birthday party, complete with balloons, a clown, a piñata and of course cake, snacks and pollo la brasa.

Date night!

Last weekend was our first post-baby night out. I haven’t been this excited about staying out till 10:30 since I was 14!!!

At the end of the day, people are people no matter where you are. Like any new parents we’ve been overjoyed with our new baby, but also quite overwhelmed. Patricia has been doing a great job taking care of our wawa, but after 10 months just to be able to go out for a few hours without the baby was a big event for us.

Patricia’s mom was kind enough to watch the baby for us while we went out to get a bite and a drink downtown at the Plaza de Armas here in Cusco.

Flying with baby

We had a very good flight with the baby from Lima, Peru, to Amsterdam yesterday, a 12.5 hour intercontinental flight with a 5-month old baby. So here are a few tips about how to fly with a baby.

First: Tank up before flying, make sure baby’s tummie is good and full. The same thing is true for adults BTW, flying on an empty stomach is a bad idea.

Get a good meal before flying

You also want to keep the baby awake before the flight (in our case the flight left at 8:35pm), and, stating the obvious, change diaper before you get on the plane.

Second: Pick a fun place to go.

Look at that screen, are there any of those destinations you wouldn’t want to go to? Iquitos, Arequipa, Tarapoto, all places I want to go. I mean, if you’re possibly going to annoy 200 perfect strangers with a fussy baby, it better be worth it ;)

Third: Get all the necessary supplies to fly with baby. Diapers, bibs, a change of clothes, some extra baby food, paper towels, toys, etc. Brianna was also checking out some new sunglasses at the mall before we left… but we ended up not getting them because they made her look too pituca.

Fourth: Pick good seats…

The best seats for flying with a baby are in the front of the airplane, because there’s less noise and vibration.

And the most important part about flying with a baby: Request a crib!!!

Before we left, Patricia read online that most airlines carry baby cribs on long flights, which KLM confirmed on its website. We called ahead of time to request a crib, and the baby slept for most of the flight.

How we got our good seats is a story in itself. KLM opened the flight for online checkin 30 hours before departure. We checked out the seating chart beforehand and decided we wanted the first row behind business class, where there is extra legroom and a nearby bathroom. Right when the online checkin opened up I tried to select our favorite seats, but to no avail… No matter how desperately I clicked away on my laptop, I was unable to change my seat from the dreaded 43B (second-to-last row, middle seat). So I called KLM (thank goodness for Skype) and was told that I couldn’t select my seats online because I was traveling with a baby, but that our seats could be changed at the airport. We decided to go early to the airport and when we asked if we could have better seats, the agent told us he had already given us the first 2 seats for baby, 10 H&J. First row behind business class, with extra legroom, space for a baby crib and a nearby bathroom. The exact same seats we tried to select online! Que buena suerte!!!

Other than that, the cabin crew aboard KLM was very nice, Brianna even got her very own KLM bib!!!

UPDATE 12/22: while flying with baby was easy, adjusting to the time difference (6 hours) has been H*LL. Nada de dormir at night, wake her up in the morning and half hour later she falls back asleep. It takes her until 2:00pm-ish to fully wake up, and until 4:00am-ish to finally sleep at night.

HELP: any experience with babies adjusting to a time difference, please let us know!!!

I cried

While Patricia was out this morning the baby woke up, so I put her next to me while I was working…

Baby listening to rock and roll music

I played some Beatles music on iTunes to keep her entertained.

“… Someone to love,
Somebody new.
Someone to love,
Someone like you.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
…”

And I cried…

Darn rock ‘n roll music, without it I would still be living in the suburbs, working my butt off at a job I liked only for the money, every day one day closer to death :)

Dogs and baby

For my dog-loving friends, a few pictures of our baby with the dogs… I got yelled at for the second one :)

Both my mom and Patricia’s mom were pretty worried about the dogs, now that our new baby has arrived. My mom was particularly worried because Manchita is a Blue Pitbull, but the dogs seemed to realize right away this little wawa was a new addition to our family. I imagine in a few months when Brianna starts throwing – digo eating food from a high chair, that will take her relationship with the dogs to a whole new level :)

Of course if you have strong, protective dogs like ours you have to pay attention to them around kids, especially once our baby gets a bit older and has her friends over to the house, but we’re of to a good start!

McBooby

We were at Don Esteban & Don Pancho the other day when our wawa got hungry, so Patricia fed her. No big deal, unlike in the US, here in Peru you see women breastfeeding their babies in public all the time.

Breastfeeding at Don Esteban & Don Pancho

According to the CDC, breastfeeding rates in the US fall short of objectives. Duhh… as long as women can’t breastfeed anywhere outside their own homes what can you expect?

I mean, I grew up 2 hours outside of Amsterdam so NOTHING SCARES ME, but what could possibly be offensive about a mother nursing her child? If more women are to breastfeed their babies for longer periods, let them feed their baby whether they’re at a soccer game, in McDonalds or in the comfort of their own home.

Baby pictures

Here’s a few more pictures of our baby Brianna. Some were taken at the Clinica Paredes where she was born, and a few more here at our apartment in Cusco:

She’s already a week old, and both mommy and baby are doing well.

I think all babies are cute, but it’s funny how many people here were hoping the baby would look like a gringa… “ojalá que salga con las ojos de su padre” … while all of my gringo friends were saying “let’s hope she looks like her mommy.” ;)
